Single malt Scotch tasting:  tour of Scotland

Whether you're a single malt connoisseur or novice, here's the chance for your palate to compare seven ½-ounce drams from six Scotch regions. Pungent peat, nuttiness, salty sea air, and fresh fruit: These are but some of the myriad flavors in malted Scotch whisky. Cleanse your palate between drams with hors d'oeuvres by Atlantic City's own Miner's Grubstake.

Scotland's smallest distillery is the first stop on the tour: Edradour  (edra-DOWER). This 10 year old malt hails from the southern Highlands.

Three 12 year olds play up Islay (EYE-la), the northern Highlands, and southern Scotland's Lowlands. Bruichladdich (brewch-LADDIE), Scotland's farthest west distillery, produces the island flavor. Old Pulteney (OLD Pult-nay), the mainland's most northern maker of malt, conjures visions of its fishing port past. And Glenkinchie, one of the few Lowlands distilleries, represents itself as "The Edinburgh malt."

Head west to Campbeltown to sample that peninsular region's 15 year old Springbank. Then return to the north to Speyside, a separate region of the Highlands in which half of Scotland's 90 distilleries reside, to sample The Glenlivet (glen-LIV-et) French Oak Reserve, also a 15 year old.

Finally, call on the western island where George Orwell wrote 1984. The Isle of Jura (Jer-ra) distillery makes this 16 year old and touts it as "the islanders' favourite."

Maps, books, pamphlets, and distillery information will be on hand. Use our "tasting notes" cards to record your impressions. Your hosts, one a single malt Scotch connoisseur-in-training, will lead you on this epic trip to taste uisage beatha (OOSH-ki baah), Scots Gaelic for "water of life."

Bottles of these and other single malt whiskies will be available in limited numbers in our Two-bit Cowboy Saloon ($45 to $105).

If this tasting doesn't fit your schedule, contact us to arrange a tasting for your company, private party, or fund raiser anywhere in Wyoming. Please give us time to obtain the appropriate catering permit from your local authorities.
